CASE STUDY · NORTHGATE STUDIO, MANCHESTER

Thirty-eight pages rebuilt in nine days.

Northgate came off a theme with four hundred lines of patched CSS. They rebuilt on the pack, kept every layout decision inside the Elementor panel, and handed the site to a client who has never opened a code editor.

WHAT THEY SAID AFTERWARDS
SINCE 2021

We shipped as Techfyd for four years. Same people, shorter name.

Some of the reviews below still say Techfyd. That was us, from 2021 until the rename, and the same five people are still on the other end of the inbox.

We build for people who hand sites over: bloggers, shop owners and small studios who need the thing to keep working after the invoice is paid.

Google Reviews Grid

Straight answers about what this one does, where it fits in a real build, and what it costs you to ship.

Read the documentation for this one, or write to us — a human answers inside a business day.

How do I display my Google reviews on a WordPress page?

Add the Google Reviews widget from Sky Addons for Elementor, paste your Google Place ID into it, and save a Google Maps API key with the Places API enabled under Sky Addons → Settings → API. The widget then requests that place’s details from Google and lays the reviews out as a grid.

Why does the grid only show five reviews?

Because Google’s Place Details API returns a maximum of 5 reviews per place, and Google chooses which ones. That ceiling comes from Google, not from Sky Addons, so no Elementor plugin can show your full review history through this endpoint. Everything below the cap — layout, styling, filtering — is yours to set.

Does the grid do masonry as well as equal columns?

Both. Layout Type switches between a regular grid and a masonry layout built with CSS columns, and Columns defaults to 3. Masonry lets a long review sit beside a one-line one without either card being padded out to match — useful when Google hands you five reviews of very different lengths.

Will these reviews add star ratings to my search results?

No. Sky Addons’ Google Reviews widget outputs presentational markup only — no review schema and no JSON-LD — because Google does not permit a business to mark up its own reviews for rich results. The widget exists to show social proof to visitors, not to manufacture a star snippet.

How often does it re-check Google for new reviews?

On the Cache Duration you choose: 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 1 day, 3 days or 1 week, with 12 hours as the default. Between refreshes the grid is served from a stored copy, so a busy page makes one Places request per interval instead of one per visitor.

What can I hide on each review card?

Avatar, reviewer name, date, star rating, review text and the Google logo each have their own switch and all start on. Excerpt Length trims the review text at 160 characters, and three card styles are offered, so the same five reviews can read as dense tiles or as generous quote cards.

Does it use the same key as the Map widget?

Yes — Sky Addons keeps a single Google key in its API settings and both the Google Map and Google Reviews widgets read it. Do check that the Places API is enabled for that key in the Google Cloud console, because a key that works perfectly for maps will still return an error for reviews without it.

Can I filter out low-star reviews?

Yes, using Minimum Rating, which runs from one star and above up to five stars only. It filters the five reviews Google already returned rather than fetching more, so a strict setting can leave the grid holding one or two cards — and if none qualify, the widget renders nothing at all.

Does it store reviews in my database?

Only as a cache. The Places response is held in a WordPress transient keyed to the Place ID and language for the duration you set, and nothing is written as posts, comments or custom fields. Remove the widget, let the transient lapse, and no trace of the reviews is left behind.

Do I need Elementor Pro to use it?

No. The Google Reviews widget ships in Sky Addons Pro and runs on free Elementor. Grid and masonry layout, the place summary, the rating filter, the caching and every typography and colour control come from Sky Addons, so there is no Elementor Pro licence and no separate reviews plugin involved.
